We like a girl with a plan – and so we love this dark reboot of the well worn classic, Little Red Riding Hood. Gone are the days of an easily fooled little girl in need of a strong woodsman to save her, this Little Red has her act together (and an axe up her sleeve). Red saunters away from her encounter with the “big bad wolf” minus a grandma (a fact which doesn’t seem to bother her much) but with the bonus of a fabulous new coat.
It’s not just the way Bethan Woollvin handles the story’s retelling that caught our eye. Woollvin’s illustrations are full of subtle humour and her use of colour — largely black, white and grey with pops of brilliant red — is striking. This is Woollvin’s first foray into the world of illustrated children’s books. We can wait to see what else she has up her sleeve.
